HOUGHTON, NY -- The Alfred University baseball team played the first of three games this weekend against the Russell Sage Gators on Saturday night. They fell in a losing effort 11-0.
"I am proud of the way the guys played tonight. They played hard and gave everything they had, which was all I asked out of them prior to the game," Assistant Coach
Mike Bassage said. "Our pitching kept us in the game and gave us a shot until late. We just were not able to capitalize on the offensive side tonight. We will be ready for two tomorrow!"
Luke Rogoff (Cortland, NY/Cortland) got the nod on the mound. He threw four nice innings, only giving up one run on three hits with a strikeout in a 61-pitch performance.
Thomas Makela (Cocoa, FL/Cocoa) and
Patrick Quinn (Barnegat, NJ/Barnegat) followed suit with three-innings each.
CJ Elizondo (Laredo, TX/Nixon) followed suit by closing out the game with a superb strikeout.
The Saxons were held to only one hit despite making good contact over the plate. The lone hit came from first-baseman
Jeff Petrozzini (Hopewell, NJ/Hopewell Valley) with a bloop single to center field. He and the rest of the field players did a nice job defensively, only committing one error all night.
AU will be right back it for some Sunday showdowns against the same Gator side. The doubleheader will get underway at noon.
