DAVENPORT, FL -- The Alfred University baseball team played its fifth game of the season during spring break in Florida against fellow New York school Mount Saint Mary's College.
"I was real excited with Ben pitching today," Head Coach
Brian Kehew said."He's showed potential for being a starter for us this season."
Benjamin Weimer (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) pitched an excellent 6.1 innings in relief to close out the game for the Saxons. He collected all seven Saxon strikeouts of the day. He also forced six ground outs in a 107-pitch performance.
The Saxons opened the game with a 4-0 lead through two innings.
Nolan Pridmore (Toronto, ON, Canada/Etobicoke Collegiate Institute) knocked in the first run in the first inning with a ground out to the right side to bring home
Angelo DeFilippis (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) from third.Â
Pridmore also brought in two more with an RBI single in the second, but also thanks to a string of errors in a pickle situation by the Knights third-baseman. This allowedÂ
Sam Brocklebank (Bloomfield, NY/Bloomfield) to score from third with
Jack Grider (Stafford, VA/Brooke Point) right behind him.
Three more runs were put on the board in the seventh inning to bring the game within two. Brocklebank drove in two more with a ground rule double over the right field fence. He advanced to third on a wild pitch himself. He was then driven home by
Brayden Bedingfield (Seabrook, TX/Clear Falls) and his ground out to the shortstop.
AU had the tying run up to the plate in the final two innings but were denied by a diving catch by Mount Saint Mary's left fielder. They had another great shot in the ninth and were unlucky to not find the outfield grass.
The Saxons will have another opportunity to enter the win column Thursday morning against Lakeland University from Wisconsin at 9:30 a.m.
