ELMIRA, NY - The Alfred University men's basketball team wrapped up their weekend with a narrow 78-75 loss to Elmira College on Saturday afternoon.
Amoi Charles (Elmont, NY/H. Frank Carey) led Alfred University with a team-high 15 points and a pair of blocks.
Tyler Hind (Randolph, NY/Randolph) recorded 14 points and six assists.
Zion Baitey (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) added 13 points and five rebounds for the Saxons.
"Not quite the result we were looking for tonight," Head Coach
Erich Kaempffe said. "Hats off to Elmira - I thought they played really well. We didn't do enough to affect the outcome of the game. I know we're all excited to get back to work on Monday."
Alfred University set the tone to begin the first half, as three different players scored as part of an opening 11-2 run. A deep shot by
Tyler Curran (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) was immediately followed by a basket from
Casey Curran (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone), as AU was ahead by double-digit figures at the 11:38 mark. Later in the half, Baitey scored eight straight points for AU, who took a 48-26 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Elmira began to cut into their deficit, as an eventual 8-1 run had Alfred University leading by less than 10 points with roughly 11 minutes remaining. Elmira later put together a 13-1 run to tie the game at the 5:22 mark. Baskets by Casey and
Oscar Wolter (Munich, Germany/Lycee Jean Renoir) equalized the game when the team was trailing, with a layup from
Kenneth Allison Jr (Troy, NY/Lansingburgh) giving the Saxons a one-point advantage with under two minutes in the final half of regulation. However, Elmira outscored AU 9-5 in the final two minutes to come away with the win.
Alfred University will next return home to host SUNY Brockport on Friday night with tip-off at 7:30 PM.
