ALFRED, NY – A dominant defensive performance from the Alfred University men's basketball team resulted in a 69-49 win over top-seeded Brockport on Friday night from the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.
The Saxons (12-11, 8-6 Empire 8) held the Golden Eagles (14-9, 12-2 Empire 8) to just 29.1 percent from the field, while picking up a season-high 43 rebounds.
Tyler Hind (Randolph, NY/Randolph) led Alfred University with a team-high 18 points to go with six rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.
Amoi Charles (Elmont, NY/H. Frank Carey) was dominant on both ends of the floor, recording 13 points and nine boards.
Kenneth Allison Jr (Troy, NY/Lansingburgh) contributed with 12 points off the bench for AU.
"I thought tonight was the kind of effort that we need in order to be successful and have been searching for a bit," Head Coach
Erich Kaempffe said. "We guarded, rebounded, and made some big shots when they mattered. I am proud of the team, but we know we have to bounce back quickly and be better tomorrow."
The Saxons were forced to play from behind after Brockport opened the game with a 9-0 run. Alfred University relied on four straight points from Allison before
Casey Curran (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) added a successful shot from beyond the arc. Consecutive deep shots from Charles gave the Saxons their first lead of the evening at the 6:25 mark of the first half. Charles added three more points, while
Zion Baitey (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) hit a layup in the closing minute of the first half, as Alfred University went into the break with a narrow 31-30 advantage.
Three different Saxons scored within the first two minutes of the second half to extend the lead. Moments later, the Golden Eagles cut their deficit to just a single point before Hind landed a shot from three-point territory. The defense for AU held Brockport without a single point for over five minutes to put together an eight-point advantage. A jump shot from Allison had the Saxons leading by double-digit figures with just over 10 minutes remaining. The defense once again stepped up, holding the Golden Eagles to nine points across the final 10 minutes before the final horn secured the victory for Alfred University.
Alfred University will next host Geneseo on Saturday with tip-off scheduled for 4:00 PM. Prior to the game, Alfred University Men's Basketball will celebrate Senior Day.
