ALFRED, NY – A competitive home outing for the Alfred University men's basketball team resulted in a 64-58 win over Geneseo on Saturday afternoon from the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.
Prior to the game, Alfred University Men's Basketball team took some time to recognize their senior class competing in their final home games of the regular this season. This year's senior class included
Kenneth Allison Jr (Troy, NY/Lansingburgh),
Casey Curran (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone),
AJ Giaquinto (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake),
Jackson White (Hornell, NY/Hornell) and
Oscar Wolter (Munich, Germany/Lycee Jean Renoir).
Tyler Hind (Randolph, NY/Randolph) led Alfred University with a team-high 14 points to go with four assists and a pair of steals.
Amoi Charles (Elmont, NY/H. Frank Carey) registered 13 points and eight rebounds. Curran added 13 points and eight boards for AU.
"Today was a really good team win against a Geneseo team that's playing very well right now," Head Coach
Erich Kaempffe said. "But, that was secondary today. Honoring KJ, Casey, AJ, Jackson, and Oscar was the most important thing that happened this afternoon. Those guys have given so much to this program and their teammates and I can't really put into words how much they mean to us. I just feel fortunate to have been able to spend the last four years with them."
The Saxons (13-11, 9-6 Empire 8) and the Knights (9-25, 6-9 Empire 8) went back-and-forth to begin the afternoon, as there were eight lead changes across the first seven minutes of action. Consecutive three-point shots by Hind, Curran and
Robby Hicks (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) had AU leading by as many as six points at the 9:42 mark. The Knights equalized the game in the closing stages of the first half, but a late layup by Hind had the Saxons ahead in 34-32 fashion going into the break.
The early moments of the second half held a similar tune, as there were three additional lead changes within the first four minutes. A 15-0 run by Geneseo forced Alfred University to play from behind. The Saxons responded with an 11-0 run of their own to turn the game into a one-possession contest with under eight minutes remaining. A three-point play by Charles gave the lead back to AU with under five minutes left in regulation. Important free throws by Allison and Curran extended the lead for AU in the closing stages, as the Saxons ultimately came away with the win.
Alfred University will next wrap up their regular season on the road at Houghton University on Tuesday night at 7:30 PM.
