Saxons Conclude Weekend With Victory Over Hawks

ALFRED, NY – An elite performance on both ends from the Alfred University men's basketball team led to a 73-53 win over Hartwick College on Saturday night from the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.

The Saxons (10-10, 6-5 Empire 8) held the Hawks (3-17, 3-8 Empire 8) to 34.5 percent from the field, allowing just three successful shots from beyond the arc. The defense additionally forced 17 turnovers in their winning efforts.

Amoi Charles (Elmont, NY/H. Frank Carey) led Alfred University with a double-double performance that consisted of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Zion Baitey (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) finished the game with 10 points and six boards. Tyler Hind (Randolph, NY/Randolph) added 10 points for AU.

"A great job by our team on short preparation and being ready to go," Head Coach Erich Kaempffe said. "Hartwick runs some tricky stuff, and I thought we were as prepared as we could be. We just need to keep getting better – we'll get back to work on Monday."

Charles and Tyler Curran (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) each hit three-point shots in the opening stages of the first half for the initial lead. A deep shot from Nolan Gilbert (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) sparked a 16-0 run for Alfred University, as the team led by as many as 20 points at the 7:10 mark. The defense held the team to just two points across the final two minutes of the half before going into the break with a 39-27 advantage.

The Hawks cut into their deficit in the early moments of the second half, but early scoring by Hind and Oscar Wolter (Munich, Germany/Lycee Jean Renoir) distanced the lead for the Saxons. Later in the half, AU relied on three-point plays from Baitey and Charles to lead by a game-high 26 points. Hartwick scored the final six points of regulation, but Alfred University was the one to come away with the victory.

Alfred University will next travel to face Keuka College on Friday with tip-off slated for 7:30 PM.
