GENESEO, NY – The Alfred University women's volleyball team dropped an Empire 8 road contest to SUNY Geneseo, 3-2, on Saturday.
The Saxons (12-15, 4-5 Empire 8) won the first set by a score of 25-20. The Knights (12-10, 5-3 Empire 8) won the next two, 25-23 and 25-16. AUVB tied the match after taking a 25-22 victory in the fourth set. Unfortunately, the Saxons fell short in the fifth by a score of 15-13.
Taylor Malone (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) led with 19.5 points. She finished with 16 kills, three service aces and one block assist. She also had a team second-best 13 digs.
Cara Bratthauar (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) registered her third double-figure scoring performance of the season. She tallied a career-high 12.5 points with a career-high nine kills and five blocks.
Carleigh Santavy (Commerce, MI/Walled Lake Northern) finished with 12 points on 11 kills and two block assists.
Meanwhile,
Delaney Sims (Bogart, GA/George Walton Academy) scored 11 points with eight kills, three blocks, and one service ace. She also added 39 assists and 12 digs to her stat line for another double-double.
A day after breaking the single-season record for service aces,
Meeghan Peterson (Amherst, NY/Williamsville South) tallied a career-high 11 digs. She also recorded four service aces.
Madalynn McGowan (Corona, CA/Norco) led AUVB in digs with a game-high 16. She matched her career-high with four assists.
The Saxons were down 11-6 in the first set. Five errors by the Knights tied the match. Geneseo went back up by four before kills by Sims and Bratthauar and a Knights' error tied the game once again, this time at 14-all. The rest of the first set consisted of two ties. Down 19-16, AUVB went on a strong run of 9-1 to secure the 1-0 start. Sims scored three kills while Peterson notched two service aces.
After Geneseo won the next two sets, the Saxons found themselves down 5-3. AUVB responded with a 14-5, utilizing three kills by Malone and four service aces as a team. Malone contributed three of the Saxons' six final kills to seal the fourth set victory and force the match into the fifth.
Geneseo pulled ahead to a 6-3 lead in the fifth. Bratthaur joined
Julia Abbott (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) in a block assist before adding a kill in the next play. AUVB pulled within one on an attack error by the Knights, 8-7. Santavy and Sims added kills to keep the score close, but it was not enough as Geneseo pulled away with its next five points compared to the Saxons' four to bring the match to its final score.
AUVB plays its final road match of the regular season at Nazareth University on Friday at 6:00 PM.
