Saxons Drop Final Home Game of 2025 Season to SUNY Delhi

ALFRED, NY -- The Alfred University men's soccer team wrapped up its 2025 home slate with a non-conference loss to SUNY Delhi 2-1 on Wednesday night.

AU (4-8-3, 2-4-3 Empire 8) controlled most of the ball in the opening 45 minutes and had looks with two early corner kicks. Two of those opportunities came from Hamza Kromah (Margibi, Liberia/Western Reserve Academy) and Juan Jose Menendez Gutierrez (Villanueva Cañada, Madrid, Spain/Woodstock Academy), both missing the frame. They led the Saxons in shots with four and three respectively.

Alfred's goal came thanks to Xavier Bowman (Hampstead, MD/Manchester Valley) drawing a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box. It would come off the foot of Rodrigo Perez (Pelencia, Spain/IES Victorio Macho), as his curling shot went into the far corner. It marked the captain's first goal of the season.

The Saxons kept fighting in the second half after letting an equalizer in the first six minutes. They matched the Broncos in shots, with six each in the second 45 minutes and finished ahead after 90 minutes 11-8. They forced two big saves by the Delhi netminder on great opportunities, the lone two saves of the match for either side.

Connor Russell (Canastota, NY/Canastota) was kept actionless in the first half in his second consecutive start, while unable to do much on either goal given up in the second half. While down in the final 10 minutes, the side in front of him was unable to find a game-tying goal.

Alfred University will hit the road for its final two games of the season as they look to clinch a spot in the Empire 8 tournament. First up is a big match up to a team just ahead of them in the standings, at Hartwick. Kickoff on Saturday afternoon is at 2:00 p.m.
