ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's basketball team outscored Russell Sage College in both halves as part of a 65-56 win on Friday night from the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.
The Saxons (9-10, 5-5 Empire 8) have now defeated the Gators (12-7, 5-5 Empire 8) in seven consecutive matchups dating back to the 2021-22 season.
Tyler Curran (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) led Alfred University with a team-high 16 points to go with three assists and a pair of rebounds.
Tyler Hind (Randolph, NY/Randolph) totaled 10 points and four rebounds.
Gabe Eldaye (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) added eight points off the bench for AU.
"Tonight was a really gritty win," Head Coach
Erich Kaempffe said. "I'm really proud of our team. That is a tough Sage team that plays really hard and I thought we did a good job hanging in there until we made a couple shots late."
A deep shot by
Amoi Charles (Elmont, NY/H. Frank Carey) was followed by a layup from Hind to give AU the initial advantage. Consecutive three-point shots by
Nolan Gilbert (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) and
Oscar Wolter (Munich, Germany/Lycee Jean Renoir) had the Saxons ahead by double-digit figures. The Gators managed to cut their deficit to a single possession, but AU was still ahead 27-24 going into halftime.
Four quick points by Russell Sage had Alfred University suddenly trailing in the early stages of the second half. The Saxons relied on shots from beyond the arc from Eldaye and Hind to take the lead back with under 10 minutes remaining. A layup by
Zion Baitey (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) sparked a 7-0 run for Alfred University through the 3:26 mark. The defense held the Gators to just three points across the final 90 seconds of action to come away with the win.
Alfred University will next face Hartwick College on Saturday with tip-off at 4:00 PM.
