ALFRED, NY – An elite defensive performance from the Alfred University men's basketball team resulted in a 68-50 win over Elmira College on Friday evening from the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.
The Saxons (6-6, 2-1 Empire 8) held the Soaring Eagles (4-7, 0-2 Empire 8) without a single successful 3-point field goal as part of their winning efforts. The defense held Elmira to their lowest point total in a head-to-head matchup dating back to the 2017-18 season.
Oscar Wolter (Munich, Germany/Lycee Jean Renoir) led Alfred University with a team-high 18 points to go with four rebounds and a pair of steals.
Tyler Hind (Randolph, NY/Randolph) finished the game with 10 points while dishing six assists.
Amoi Charles (Elmont, NY/H. Frank Carey) added 10 points and two blocks for AU.
"This was a great effort by our team on the defensive end tonight," Head Coach
Erich Kaempffe said. "Elmira does some tricky stuff down there and our players did a really good job being ready for all of it. We have to get back to work right away for a tough one tomorrow."
Alfred University relied on four different players converting from beyond the arc to earn the initial lead. Moments later, a jumper by Charles extended the advantage for AU by double-digit figures. A deep shot by
AJ Giaquinto (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) was followed by a pair of free throws from
Kenneth Allison Jr (Troy, NY/Lansingburgh), as the Saxons went into the break with a 33-17 lead.
The Soaring Eagles put together an 11-2 run to begin the second half, cutting their deficit to six points with over 15 minutes remaining. The Saxons responded with a 10-2 run of their own, bringing their lead back to a 14-point margin. The defense held Elmira to just four points across the final two minutes of action, coming away with their second consecutive conference win.
Alfred University will next wrap up their weekend with a home matchup against Keuka College on Saturday at 4:00 PM.
