HAMBURG, NY -- The Alfred University Men's Soccer team took advantage of numerous chances to win on the road 3-0 over Hilbert College on Wednesday afternoon.
Defender
William Moore (Stormville, NY/John Jay) led the way with two goals, and
Justin Eaton (Williamson, NY/Williamson) opening up the scoring from the penalty spot. The three Saxons goals came in quick succession, 13 minutes apart in the second half. Eaton's penalty was smashed home into the top right corner, despite a touch from Hawks goaltender Daniel Downes. Moore's second goal was a spectacular effort, as his cross from the left wing ended up being a shot which nestled into the Hilbert top-corner to all but put the game to bed for the Saxons.
"The conditions were challenging for the team as the grass field did not give a true bounce," Head Coach
Tracy Blake said. "But, we changed our tactics in the second half and it paid off."
The win for Alfred is also the first shutout of the season for
Tyler Mulholland (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) and the second of his collegiate career. He was quiet all afternoon as he only faced seven shots, none of which forced him to make a save. Meanwhile, his teammates kept the ball on the other end of the field for most of the game, forcing eight corner kicks, 11 shots on goal and 23 shots total in the match.
This match was the start of three matches in four days for the Saxons Men's Soccer squad, as they head off to the 2024 Blue Devil Classic hosted by Fredonia University this weekend. Its first game is Friday afternoon against Buffalo State University with kickoff at 1:00 pm.
