DALLAS, PA -- The Alfred University women's volleyball team won its opening match on Saturday over Centenary University (New Jersey) before falling in the nightcap to Oswego State, closing out the four-match, two-day stay at Misericordia University.
The Saxons (8-3, 0-0 Empire 8) defeated Centenary in three sets, 25-22, 25-14, 25-17 before falling in three sets to Oswego, 20-25, 15-25, 13-25.
Catherina Krause (Pflugerville, TX/Hendrickson) led in the first match as she was one ace away from tying a 2008 school record for most aces in a three-set match as she had six. She added five kills, two solo blocks and one block assist while chipping in four set assists and one dig.
Lay Evans (Erie, PA/Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy) had 10 kills and four digs in the match against Centenary as both her and Krause were the only players in the match to score in double-digits.
Jade Wolfer (Nunda, NY/Keshequa) had a match-high 21 digs and was followed by
Leah Marques (Adelanto, CA/Adelanto) with 12 and
Anjoeline Armstrong (Simi Valley, CA/Bishop Alemany) who had 11. Marques also had a match-high in set assists with 19.
In the late match,
Taylor Malone (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) had the team-high in scoring with 9.5 points with eight kills, an ace and a block assist.
Jamie Chun (Hilo, HI/Hilo) had the most digs with 16 while
Jessica Lucille Ramirez (Riverside, CA/Hillcrest) held the team's high in set assists with 11.
The Saxons will next open up Empire 8 play with a road match at Elmira College on Friday, October 4 at 6:00pm.
