Saxons Stars Shine in Win at Houghton

HOUGHTON, NY -- The Alfred University Men's Soccer team improved to 2-1-1 in Empire 8 conference play with a big 3-0 win over Houghton on Saturday.

It would be plenty of familiar faces leading the way for the Saxons as it has been all season long. Xavier Bowman (Hampstead, MD/Manchester Valley) had one shot saved, but then was able to finish a chance just 15 seconds later, and led his team to a 1-0 lead just 10 minutes in. Alfred University's second goal would come just before the half-hour mark, with a Gavin Culley (San Diego, CA/San Dieguito Academy) corner kick finding Justin Eaton (Williamson, NY/Williamson) for the finish.

In the second half, Eaton would record his second of the game with an assist from Bowman. Eaton ended with his two goals, alongside Bowman's goal and assist. It would be part of a clinical performance from the Saxons, with 10 of their registered 12 shots on target. At the other end, Tyler Mulholland (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) would be kept busy by chances from the Highlanders making three saves in the second half.

"Xavier led the front line excellently and its always good to get all three forwards on the assist or goal tally," Head Coach Tracy Blake said. "The whole squad worked very hard against a well-coached Houghton team. Our defensive line really earned the shutout."

The Saxons have a little streak going, scoring points in four of their last five games - and were unlucky not get at least a point out of their one loss in the last five games. With Empire 8 conference games ramping up, it's more important than ever for Alfred University to continue their current run of form.

They'll look to continue their good form at home for three of their next four games. It starts this Wednesday, October 2 against St. John Fisher, with kickoff at 4:00 pm.
