ALFRED, NY -- The Alfred University Saxons fell in a hard-fought close battle 1-0 to the St. John Fisher Cardinals.

The difference would be a Cardinal goal in the 75th minute which would make the difference. Before then in the first half, it was a close and competitive match-up with a 7-4 shot split. The best chance for the Saxons came from Gavin Culley (San Diego, CA/San Dieguitio Academy) with a long shot from outside the box, forcing a diving save in the 24th minute.

In the second 45 minutes, it would be all Alfred University throwing chances at the net, recording 10 shots in the half and six corner kicks. Some of those chances included Juan Jose Menendez Gutierrez (Villanueva Cañada, Madrid, Spain/Woodstock Academy) and Rodrigo Perez (Pelencia, Spain/IES Victorio Macho) shots being blocked in the 58th minute. Xavier Bowman (Hampstead, MD/Manchester Valley) had a great chance pushed over the bar, and was part of a goalmouth scramble off a corner kick, where the ball kicked out to Zach Maryanski (Sykesville, MD/Century), and his shot just went inches wide of the left post.

Tyler Mulholland (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) kept it close all game long for his team in the process, with four saves and plenty of broken up plays along the way. Both Maryanski and Bowman had chances before the game came to a close off of corner kicks, being cleared off the line and in Bowman's case, finding the back of the net in the 83rd minute. But, the goal would be called back and ultimately it just did not fall the Saxons way Wednesday afternoon, who were unlucky to at least not earn a point. 

Alfred University will get another shot at redemption this Saturday night back at Yunevich Stadium against Elmira College. Kickoff is at 6:00 pm.
