DALLAS, PA – The Alfred University women's volleyball team won its opening match at the 2024 Cougar Clash, defeating SUNY Oneonta, 3-1 before falling to the hosts, Misericordia University in three set on Friday evening.
The Saxons (7-2, 0-0 Empire 8) defeated the Red Dragons (7-8, 0-0 SUNYAC) 25-22, 25-19, 17-25 and 25-20. They then fell to the Cougars (12-2, 0-1 MAC Freedom) 15-25, 9-25, 23-25.
Match One
Alfred University – 3 | SUNY Oneonta – 1
The Saxons had three players reach double-digit points, led by the match-high score of 16.0 by
Taylor Malone (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) who totaled 14 kills and two aces while completing a double-double by adding 16 digs.
Catherina Krause (Pflugerville, TX/Hendrickson) chipped in another double-double as she had 12.0 points from 10 kills and two aces while contributing 10 set assists.
Carleigh Santavy (Commerce, MI/Walled Lake Northern) scored 11.0 points with 10 kills and one solo block while also earning her double-double with 10 digs.
Leading the backrow was
Jamie Chun (Hilo, HI/Hilo) who recorded a personal best in four-set digs with 29, breaking her best of 27 set in 2021 against Russell Sage.
Anjoeline Armstrong (Simi Valley, CA/Bishop Alemany) followed with 19 digs as Malone and Santavy followed with their double-digit digs.
Jessica Lucille Ramirez (Riverside, CA/Hillcrest) led the five Saxons that had set assists as she had 25, tying her career-high set against Penn State Behrend earlier this month. Krause's 10 set assists were just ahead of
Leah Marques (Adelanto, CA/Adelanto) and her eight.
All but one Saxon recorded a point out of those who stepped onto the court.
Match Two
Alfred University – 0 | Misericordia – 3
The Saxons were once again spearheaded by Malone who totaled nine kills and one block assist for 9.5 points. Santavy chipped in six kills and a solo block for 7.0 points. Chun had eight digs while Ramirez recorded 10 set assists.
The Saxons will next play against Centenary University (New Jersey) on Saturday at 1:00pm and ending with a match against Oswego State at 3:00pm, closing out their stay at the Cougar Clash.
