ALFRED, NY -- Alfred University's Men's Soccer team legged out a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Nazareth University Wednesday afternoon.
"This was a testing game, we showed up in the first half and it seems like we didn't show up as well we thought in the second half," Head Coach
Tracy Blake said. "We've got the passion and energy, we just have to put it together in two halves and get some more points on the board."
The Saxons opened the scoring on a beautiful set piece play in what was very good and even first half.
Rodrigo Perez (Pelencia, Spain/IES Victorio Macho) sent in the long free kick to the back post to
William Moore (Stormville, NY/John Jay), who headed it back across goal for
Justin Eaton (Williamson, NY/Williamson) who flew across to head it into the bottom corner in the 34th minute. There were a variety of chances from other players too, such as
Jaime Mendo Robles (Zarazoga, Spain/Hoosac) just not getting enough power on an open net chance early on, and
Xavier Bowman (Hampstead, MD/Manchester Valley) putting his shot from a long ball just wide in the 30th minute.
In the second half, it would be the
Tyler Mulholland (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) show. He would make three of his four saves in the final 45 minutes, which included a chance from the penalty spot for the Golden Flyers. He didn't make the save, but the Saxons netminder had the bottom right corner of the goal covered as the shot hit the post, and the ensuing rebounded goal was called off for encroachment from Nazareth - deserving of high praise from his coaching staff.
"Phenomenal performance from
Tyler Mulholland," Blake said. "Also a great goal from
Justin Eaton to get the ball rolling."
Alfred University, all evened up at 1-1-1 in Empire 8 play, continue on with a match Saturday at Houghton University. Kickoff is at 3:30 pm.
