ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University men's lacrosse team came up short in a 17-9 loss to Nazareth University on Saturday.
Owen Zimmerman (Reamstown, PA/Cocalico) led Alfred University with three goals to go with one assist.
Dawson Felenchak (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) finished the game with two goals and two assists.
Kevin Matson (Chenango Bridge, NY/Chenango Forks) added a pair of goals for AU.
"We had a slow start in the first half," Head Coach
Jason Lockner said. "'Awesome'
Dawson Felenchak played outstanding! We have to come back here Wednesday and play four quarters of our best lacrosse."
Nazareth set the tone on the offensive end, scoring four initial goals to force Alfred University to play from behind. In the second quarter, the Saxons got on the scoreboard thanks to a goal from Matson. Zimmerman and
Cole Loewke (Hilton, NY/Hilton) each found the back of the net for AU, but the Golden Flyers added six more goals before taking a 10-3 lead into halftime.
The Golden Flyers were the first to strike in the third quarter, but Felenchak scored his first goal of the afternoon to offset the damage. Felenchak was one of four Saxons to score across the final four minutes of the quarter, with
Justin Mosher (Hilton, NY/Hilton) contributing to cut the deficit with one quarter to play. Nazareth scored each of the first three goals in the fourth quarter, and while Zimmerman found the back of the net in the closing seconds, the Golden Flyers closed out the game with the win.
Alfred University will next return to No. 2 Nazareth University for the Empire 8 Tournament Semifinals, which are scheduled to take place on Wednesday at 4:00 PM.
