ROCHESTER, NY – A competitive effort from the Alfred University men's lacrosse team resulted in a 16-8 loss against Nazareth University as part of the Empire 8 Semifinals on Wednesday.
Kevin Matson (Chenango Bridge, NY/Chenango Forks) led Alfred University with a team-high four goals.
Josh Hauman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) finished the game with a pair of goals.
Brendan Riley (Fairport, NY/Fairport) added two goals for AU.
"I'm proud of the way we played today, especially in comparison to our last time out against them," Head Coach
Jason Lockner said. "Their goalie was hot early, and they shot better than we did. Kevin, Josh and Brendan did really well shooting the ball and running our offense. Everyone gave it everything they had. Hunter proved he was the best faceoff specialist in the conference, consistently recovering 50 percent or more of faceoffs during conference competition. Ben played well all over the field and did a good job of covering their best guy. 'Mean'
Shane Cubala did well on the wings. I'll miss this group of graduating players. It was truly an honor working with them."
Nazareth rattled off two quick goals in the opening quarter, but the Saxons held the Golden Flyers without a goal across the final nine minutes. AU got themselves on the scoreboard thanks to a goal from Hauman. Nazareth responded with four goals of their own before Riley found the back of the net. A goal from the Golden Flyers were answered with back-to-back goals from Matson, but Alfred University still trailed 8-4 going into halftime.
Matson recorded his third goal of the afternoon early in the third quarter. Nazareth responded with two goals of their own before Hauman scored during a man-up situation. The Golden Flyers scored twice more before going into the final quarter with a 12-6 lead. Matson and Riley each found the back of the net in the final quarter of regulation, but consistent scoring efforts from Nazareth resulted in the win.
