HOUGHTON, NY – The Alfred University baseball team began their three-game series against Houghton University with a pair of losses on Friday night.
The Saxons lost the first game 24-3, while dropping the second game 20-1.
Game One
Anthony Cortez (Los Angeles, CA/Legacy) got the initial start for Alfred University, retiring three batters via strikeout across four innings of action.
The first spark of offense from AU came in the fifth inning, as a double from
Benjamin Weimer (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) allowed
Cameron Brought (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro Area) and
Tyler Mulholland (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) to score. In the following inning, smart baserunning from
Dylan Guthrie (Alfred, NY/Alfred-Almond) tallied another run for the Saxons.
Houghton scored in each of the first four innings, adding additional run support in the sixth inning to come away with the win.
Game Two
Owen Jennings (Newcastle, ON, Canada/St. Stephen's Secondary) started on the mound for the Saxons, striking out four batters across 4.1 innings.
The lone run for Alfred University came in the sixth inning, as a sacrifice fly from
Nolan Pridmore (Toronto, ON, Canada/Etobicoke Collegiate Institute) drove in
Jaymes Buddenhagen (Hortonville, NY/Sullivan West).
The Highlanders once again answered with consistent offense, which led to their second victory of the evening.
Alfred University will next wrap up their weekend at Houghton University on Saturday at 7:00 PM.
