ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's lacrosse team wrapped up their final home game with a 26-5 victory over Keuka College on Saturday from Yunevich Stadium.
The winning effort from the Saxons resulted in their most goals against the Wolves dating back to competition beginning in 1989.
Kevin Matson (Chenango Bridge, NY/Chenango Forks) led Alfred University with seven goals to go with a pair of assists.
Owen Zimmerman (Reamstown, PA/Cocalico) finished the game with six goals.
Cole Loewke (Hilton, NY/Hilton) and
Dawson Felenchak (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) ended the game with two goals and two assists.
"Our team did a great job today," Head Coach
Jason Lockner said. "It was a good team effort. I love it when everybody gets to contribute.
Torin Pottinger played extremely well in goal.
Kevin Matson shot well today.
Nicholas Kramer was an animal with the ground balls in the second attack that came in and did great work."
Keuka was the first to get on the scoreboard in the opening quarter, but Alfred University quickly responded with a goal from
Hunter Cupp (Bath, NY/Haverling). The Saxons took their first lead of the game less than a minute later thanks to an assist from
Justin Mosher (Hilton, NY/Hilton) to
Josh Hauman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder). Consecutive goals from Matson had AU leading 4-2 going into the second quarter.
An early goal from Hauman in the second quarter was followed by three straight goals by Matson to extend the lead for Alfred University. Keuka found the back of the net once in the second quarter, but AU answered with goals from Loewke, Matson, Zimmerman and
Peter Colburn (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) before taking a 13-3 advantage into the break.
The Wolves were the first to score in the second half, but Matson offset the damage with his seventh goal of the afternoon. The Saxons relied on a total of eight goals in the third quarter, which included a goal from
Brendan Riley (Fairport, NY/Fairport). In the fourth quarter, the AU offense remained hot with
Nick Volpe (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post) getting involved. The Saxons relied on late goals from
Drew Smith (Walworth, NY/Ruben A. Cirillo) and
Tyler Muskopf (Elmira, NY/Iroquois) to close out the game with the win.
Alfred University will next wrap up their regular season with a road game at Nazareth University next Saturday at 1:00 PM.
