AUBURNDALE, FL - The Alfred University baseball team concluded their Spring Break trip to Florida, losing a pair of games to Wentworth Institute of Technology on Friday.
The Saxons (1-8, 0-0 Empire 8) lost the first game by a score of 11-0, while dropping the second game 26-0.
"We didn't get the results we wanted, but we came away with a lot of valuable lessons," Head Coach
Brian Kehew said. "We faced some challenges and saw some positive things throughout the week. We're excited to get back and return to competition."
Game One
In the first game,
Ashton Goring (Brampton, ON, Canada/Cardinal Ambrozic Secondary) got his second start of the spring season. Goring went three innings for the Saxons, striking out four batters.
Gabe Cheddie (Toronto, ON, Canada/Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute) put together an impressive relief performance, tossing three scoreless innings for Alfred University.
Cheddie was responsible for one of three hits for the Saxons offense.
Quinton Jordan (Olean, NY/Olean) and
Benjamin Weimer (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) were each also credited with a hit.
Wentworth scored in each of the first three innings, and despite the pitching and defense stepping up in the later innings, the deficit was too large for Alfred University.
Game Two
Owen Jennings (Newcastle, ON, Canada St. Stephen's Secondary) stepped onto the mound for the Saxons in the second leg of the double-header. Jennings finished the game with four strikeouts across four innings of work in his second start of the season.
Anthony Cortez (Los Angeles, CA/Legacy) and Weimer each contributed in relief, combining for five strikeouts in three innings of action.
Wentworth put across five runs in the top half of the first inning, while AU's offense relied on an early base hit from
Jeff Petrozzini (Hopewell, NJ/Hopewell Valley). The offense also saw hits from
Cameron Brought (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro Area),
Nolan Pridmore (Toronto, ON, Canada/Etobicoke Collegiate Institute) and
William Denton (Fort Edward, NY/Fort Edward), but consistent scoring efforts from Wentworth resulted in the sweep.
Alfred University will next travel to Hilbert College on Monday, March 18 with the first game beginning at 1:00 PM.
