HOUGHTON, NY - The Alfred University baseball team opened up Empire 8 competition with an 18-2 loss to Elmira College on Monday night.
The Saxons relied on Charlie Rapos (Warkworth, ON, Canada/Campbellford District) on the mound to begin the game. The first-year recorded five strikeouts for the Saxons across 2.2 innings of work.
The first hit for Alfred University came from Nolan Pridmore (Toronto, ON, Canada/Etobicoke Collegiate Institute), who reached first base in the bottom half of the first inning.
Alfred University recorded their first run in the fifth inning, after a hit-by-pitch allowed Ty Nagel (Gowanda, NY/Gowanda) to score. Smart base-running allowed Benjamin Weimer (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) to score from third following a wild pitch.
Elmira scored multiple runs in four different innings, resulting in the game being called following the seventh inning.
Alfred University will next face Elmira College in a double-header matchup at Houghton University on Tuesday, with the first game beginning at 3:00 PM.
