TROY, NY – The Alfred University baseball team continued Empire 8 competition with a pair of losses to Russell Sage College on Saturday.
The Saxons lost the first leg of the double-header 9-3 and dropped the second game 25-5.
Game One
Anthony Cortez (Los Angeles, CA/Legacy) was the first to appear on the mound for the Saxons, striking out three batters over the course of four innings.
Tyler Mulholland (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) came in for a relief appearance, completing two innings and striking out three.
Smart baserunning from
Jeff Petrozzini (Hopewell, NJ/Hopewell Valley) allowed him to score on a wild pitch to give the Saxons the initial lead in the first inning. The Gators responded with six runs of their own before
Michael Ciardiello (Rutherford, NJ/Moore Catholic) recorded an RBI single in the fourth inning, driving in
Cameron Brought (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro Area). Petrozinni reached on a fielder's choice in the sixth inning, bringing in
Dylan Guthrie (Alfred, NY/Alfred-Almond). The Gators added three runs of their own to eventually close out the first game with a win.
Game Two
Benjamin Weimer (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) got the nod for Alfred University to begin the second game. On the offensive end, Weimer began the game with an RBI double to drive in Mulholland in the first inning.
Petrozinni recorded his first home run of the spring season in the third inning. The Saxons later relied on Petrozinni in the fifth inning, as he crushed a three-run home run to bring in Mulholland and
Quinton Jordan (Olean, NY/Olean).
Russell Sage scored in each of the first six innings, with the game being called following the end of the seventh inning.
Alfred University will next wrap up their series with Russell Sage on Sunday at 12:00 PM.
