ALFRED, NY – Six different players scored for the Alfred University men's lacrosse team as part of a 14-8 win over Allegheny College on Sunday from Yunevich Stadium.
The Saxons (5-2, 0-0 Empire 8) picked up 48 ground balls as part of their winning efforts.
Kevin Matson (Chenango Bridge, NY/Chenango Forks) led Alfred University with a team-high six points from four goals and two assists.
Cole Loewke (Hilton, NY/Hilton) and
Owen Zimmerman (Reamstown, PA/Cocalico) each finished the game with three goals and an assist.
Josh Hauman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) added two goals to go with an assist for AU.
"Our team did a nice job bouncing back today," Head Coach
Jason Lockner said. "We played very well on defense and
Hunter Cupp got the job done at the faceoff. Our offense did a great job, as we spread out the scoring and moved the ball around well. Hauman played hard for us."
Early goals from Matson and Zimmerman in the opening quarter gave Alfred University the initial 2-0 lead. The Gators got themselves on the scoreboard, but the Saxons maintained a 2-1 lead going into the second quarter. A man-up goal from Matson in the second quarter sparked the AU offense. Allegheny found the back of the net, but Alfred University offset the damage following a goal from Loewke. The goal from Loewke was one of five goals for the Saxons in the second quarter, as
Brendan Riley (Fairport, NY/Fairport), Loewke and Zimmerman each scored before Alfred University took a commanding 8-2 lead into halftime.
Loewke picked up his third goal of the afternoon within the first minute of the third quarter for the Saxons. Hauman found the back of the net for AU, but Allegheny scored three times to cut their deficit to 10-5 with one quarter remaining. Allegheny was the first to score in the fourth quarter, but an assist from
Peter Colburn (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) to Hauman halted the momentum for the Gators. Allegheny scored on two more occasions, but goals from Matson, Hauman and
Benjamin Cunninham (Dover, MD/The Gunston School) were enough to secure the win for Alfred University.
Alfred University will next travel to face SUNY Brockport on Wednesday at 7:00 PM.
