Saxons Scoring Overwhelms SUNY Brockport in 17-11 Victory

BROCKPORT, NY – A competitive outing from the Alfred University men's lacrosse team led to a 17-11 win over SUNY Brockport on Wednesday.

Cole Loewke (Hilton, NY/Hilton) led Alred University with four goals and two assists. Owen Zimmerman (Reamstown, PA/Cocalico) finished the game with three goals to go with an assist. Kevin Matson (Chenango Bridge, NY/Chenango Forks) added three goals and an assist for AU.

"We came ready to play today," Head Coach Jason Lockner said. "We just need to play four quality quarters of lacrosse as we approach conference competition. Our attack unit of Matson, Loewke and Zimmerman shot well. It was great to see Marcus contributing with a goal today. It was great on the sidelines, and now it's time to get ready for Russell Sage on Saturday."

Brockport was the first to get on the scoreboard in the first quarter, but Alfred University quickly responded with a goal from Brendan Riley (Faiport, NY/Fairport). Justin Mosher (Hilton, NY/Hilton) reached the back of the net to give the Saxons the lead. Additional goals from Matson and Loewke gave AU a 4-1 lead going into the second quarter. A goal from Josh Hauman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) sparked AU's offense to begin the second quarter. Less than a minute later, a goal from Zimmerman extended the advantage for the Saxons. Brockport scored once before Alfred University responded with goals from Hauman, Loewke and Zimmerman. The Golden Eagles scored twice before the end of the first half, but the Saxons were still ahead 10-4 going into halftime.

Brockport cut their deficit following three consecutive goals in the third quarter, but a goal from Matson within the last minute had Alfred University still ahead 11-7 with one quarter remaining. Loewke recorded his third goal of the evening to begin the fourth quarter. Riley scored his second goal before Brockport got themselves back on the scoreboard. The defense held the Golden Eagles to just two goals across the last 10 minutes of the game, while the offense relied on goals from Loewke, Matson, Zimmerman and Marcus Darminio (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) to secure the win.

Alfred University will next open Empire 8 competition with a home game against Russell Sage College on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
