ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's lacrosse team picked up an 18-14 win over Misericordia University as part of their home-opener on Saturday from Yunevich Stadium.
Owen Zimmerman (Reamstown, PA/Cocalico) led Alfred University with seven goals and a pair of assists.
Cole Loewke (Hilton, NY/Hilton) finished the game with five goals.
Hunter Cupp (Bath, NY/Haverling) won 24-of-34 faceoff attempts for AU.
"Our offense performed at a high level," Head Coach
Jason Lockner said. "Zimmerman and Loewke did a good job finishing their shots. Our offensive midfielders Hauman, Mosher and Kenefick played great breaking down the defense. Shane played well on defense. We just need to focus on playing a complete game for all four quarters. We're almost there!"
Zimmerman got off to a quick start for Alfred University, scoring two early goals in the first quarter. Misericordia scored once before an assist from
Brendan Riley (Fairport, NY/Faiport) to
Kevin Matson (Chenango Bridge, NY/Chenango Forks) offset the damage. Less than a minute later, an assist from
Cameron Kenefick (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post) to Loewke extended the lead for the Saxons. A goal from
Justin Mosher (Hilton, NY/Hilton) had AU leading 6-1 going into the second quarter.
Goals from Zimmerman and
Josh Hauman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) distanced the lead for the Saxons in the early stages of the second quarter. The Cougars scored twice before Zimmerman notched his fourth goal of the afternoon. Misericordia found the back of the net on two more occasions, but Alfred University still led 9-5 at halftime.
An early goal from the Cougars were followed by goals from Hauman and Loewke. Each side scored twice more in the third quarter, with the Saxons relying on Loewke and Riley to take a 14-9 advantage into the fourth quarter. Misericordia scored five consecutive goals to cut their deficit to a single goal. However, three combined goals between Loewke and Zimmerman were enough to close out the game with the win.
Alfred University will next host Concordia University (Wis) on Wednesday at 4:00 PM.
