ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's basketball team continued their week with a 73-65 win over Russell Sage College on Friday evening from the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.
The Saxons (10-12, 7-6 Empire 8) outscored the Gators (9-14, 2-12 Empire 8) in both halves as part of their win.
Tyler Hind (Randolph, NY/Randolph) scored a team-high 19 points off the bench to go with five assists.
Adam Enders (Belfast, NY/Belfast) finished the game with 18 points and a steal.
Franlys Valenzuela (Santiago de los Cabelleros, Dominican Republic/San Ysidro) added eight points and 13 rebounds for AU.
"Tonight was a great win," Head Coach
Erich Kaempffe said. "I'm really proud of our guys. We know we have a tough game ahead of us tomorrow and we're excited to compete."
Deep shots from
Tyler Curran (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) and
Amoi Charles (Elmont, NY/H. Frank Casey) in the opening stages of the first half gave Alfred University the early lead. Russell Sage took a brief lead that was spoiled by a three-point shot from
Zion Baitey (Morristown, NJ/Morristown). The defense held the Gators to just three points across the final four minutes of the first half before taking a 28-23 lead into the break.
Oscar Wolter (Munich, Germany/Lycee Jean Renoir) sparked AU's offense with a powerful dunk to begin the second half. Russell Sage relied on an 8-0 run to take back the lead, but back-to-back three-point shots from Enders gave the advantage back to Alfred University. An additional deep shot from Enders were followed by a pair of free throws by Hind to give the Saxons their first double-digit lead of the evening. The last seven points for AU came from the charity stripe, as they held on for the win.
Alfred University will next host Hartwick on Saturday at 4:00 PM. Prior to the game, the men's basketball program will take some time to recognize their senior class.
