ALFRED, NY – A double overtime thriller for the Alfred University men's basketball team resulted in an 84-81 win over Hartwick College on Saturday evening from the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.
Prior to the game, the Saxons recognized
Jack Bernstein (Youngstown, NY/Lewiston-Porter),
Adam Enders (Belfast, NY/Belfast) and
Dylan Kolmetz (Greece, NY/Greece Odyssey) as part of their Senior Day. The program additionally thanked assistant coach
Evan Hamed for his continued efforts with the team.
Tyler Curran (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) led Alfred University with 19 points and four assists.
Franlys Valenzuela (Santiago de los Cabelleros, Dominican Republic/San Ysidro) recorded a double-double performance that included 18 points and 19 rebounds. Enders added 13 points for AU.
"The most important thing about today was honoring Bernie, Dyl and Adam," Head Coach
Erich Kaempffe said. "Those guys have given so much to our program and are first class human beings. I'm so lucky to get to work with them. The game resulted in a nice win. There was a lot of resiliency from our guys. Finding a way to win games is a positive thing."
The Saxons relied on a dominant 12-0 run to begin the first half, which included points from both Bernstein and Kolmetz. Hartwick cut their deficit at times, but a layup from
Tyler Hind (Randolph, NY/Randolph) extended the lead back to double-digit figures. A 7-0 run by the Hawks left Alfred University leading by just three points. Late free throws had the Saxons leading 34-24 going into the break.
Hartwick relied on a 10-2 run in the second half to trail by just a single possession and eventually tied the game with just over 10 minutes remaining. Each team traded shots throughout the second half, but a dunk from Hartwick in the final second of regulation to tie the game and send it into overtime.
During the first overtime period, the Saxons relied on points from Curran, Enders and Valenzuela. The Hawks took a two-point lead, but Hind quickly tied the game with a layup with 10 seconds left to send the game into double overtime. The final six points from the Saxons came from the charity stripe, while the Hawks were limited to just two points across the final 90 seconds, which resulted in the win.
Alfred University will next travel to Utica University next Friday at 7:30 PM.
