Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Narrowly Falls, 76-74 at Gordon College

WENHAM, Mass. – The Alfred University women's basketball team gave its best effort coming down the stretch, but came up short against Gordon College, 76-74, on Tuesday.

Jaidyn Chest (Mayfield, N.Y./Mayfield) was the Saxons' leading scorer for the fourth-straight game, finishing with a game-high 21 points along with four rebounds and two assists. Grace Rittenhouse (Dansville, N.Y./Dansville) tallied 16 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Felicia Stewart (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) matched her career-high 15 points while registering five rebounds.

"This one hurts because our second half was some really good basketball on both ends," Head Coach Mike Moskowitz said. "We had a solid fight in both games on this trip, but we know we need to be better in all facets on the defensive end moving forward. We're excited to get to work for conference play next week."

The first half went through five ties and 11 lead changes. The Saxons (6-4, 0-1 Empire 8) had the 16-15 edge at the end of the first quarter. The Scots erased it by outscoring the visitors, 21-14, in the second to take the 36-30 lead into halftime.

Both teams traded buckets at the start of the third quarter. Stewart and Rittenhouse combined for seven unanswered points at 4:02 to bring the team within two, 50-48. A minute later, Rittenhouse notched two free-throws that sparked a 10-4 run which brought the Saxons back in the lead by a point, 58-57. However, the Scots took it back on a three-point shot to end the third quarter.

After Gordon College extended its lead by 10 at the start of the fourth quarter, Stewart notched a layup that ignited an 11-1 run for Alfred University. Chest scored her fourth three-point shot of the game that tied it 70-all at the 1:29 mark. However, it was as close as the Saxons could get as the Scots used a 6-2 run to pull away with the victory.

Alfred University shot 28-of-66 (42.4%) from the field with 8-of-27 (29.6%) from the three-point line and 10-of-15 (66.7%) at the free-throw line. Gordon College was 29-of-69 (42.0%) overall with 11-of-31 (35.5%) from behind the arc and 7-of-10 (70.0%) at the charity stripe.

The Saxons also outscored the Scots, 40-28, in the paint.

Up next, Alfred University returns home for the start of 2025 where it will continue conference play against St. John Fisher University on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
