ALFRED, N.Y. – The Alfred University women's basketball team dropped its Empire 8 conference matchup against St. John Fisher University by a score of 85-52 on Tuesday at Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.
Jessica Beehler (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk) led the Saxons (6-5, 0-2 Empire 8) with 14 points while notching three rebounds and three assists.
Natalee Collins (Waterville, N.Y./Waterville) registered a double-figure performance of 11 points along with five boards.
"A disappointing effort all around today," Head Coach Mike Moskowitz said. "We have to focus our time and energy on getting better every day and we will do that starting tomorrow."
Collins scored Alfred University's first five points in the contest. Both teams kept the score close until the 5:12 mark when St. John Fisher University went on an 11-4 run to take the 20-11 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
At the start of the second quarter, Felicia Stewart (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and Beehler contributed back-to-back threes to bring the Saxons back within single digits, 26-17. However, that was as far as Alfred University would get as St. John Fisher University moved on to victory.
The Cardinals' shooting accuracy was the difference. The visiting team was 37-of-81 (45.7%) from the field, 6-of-22 (27.3%) at the three-point line and 5-of-9 (55.6%) from the free-throw line. The Saxons were 23-of-70 (32.9%) overall, 5-of-17 (29.4%) from behind the arc and 1-of-4 (25.0%) at the charity stripe.
St. John Fisher University outscored Alfred University, 50-32, in the paint. The Cardinals also had 21 points off 22 offensive rebounds and registered 18 points on 10 Saxon turnovers.
Up next, Alfred University remains at home for two weekend games beginning with Elmira College at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
