Men's Basketball Comes Up Short to Montclair State

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's basketball team wrapped up their first weekend of competition with a 95-85 loss to Montclair State on Saturday.

Oscar Wolter (Munich, Germany/Lycee Jean Renoir) totaled a team-high 20 points, shooting a perfect 9-for-9 from the field. Tyler Hind (Randolph, NY/Randolph) finished the game with 15 points to go with a pair of assists. Franlys Valenzuela (Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic/San Ysidro) had a double-double performance that included 11 points and 13 rebounds for AU.

"A ton of credit to Montclair State," Head Coach Erich Kaempffe said. "They were ready to go and played well. We didn't do a good enough job in the first half. However, I'm proud of our guys for the fight they showed in the second half. We'll try to put together a full 40 minutes next Wednesday."

Alfred University was forced to play from behind after Montclair State began the opening half on a 13-2 run that was snapped by a deep shot from Valenzuela. Four different Saxons, including Kenneth Allison (Troy, OH/Lansingburgh) and Gabe Eldaye (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna), scored five or more points in the opening half before the team went into halftime trailing in 50-30 fashion.

In the second half, the Saxons strung together some early points to cut into their original deficit. Points from Hind and Wolter had the team trailing by single-digit figures with 4:36 remaining in the game. Moments later, a dunk by Wolter was followed by a three-point shot by Allison Jr to cut the deficit to five points with just over a minute to play. The Saxons attempted a few deep shots in the closing stages but couldn't pull off the comeback before the final horn went off.

Alfred University will next host Misericordia College on Wednesday at 6:00 PM.
