Misericordia Slips Past Men's Basketball, 72-71

ALFRED, NY – A competitive non-conference matchup for the Alfred University men's basketball team resulted in a 72-71 loss to Misericordia University on Wednesday night from the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.

Oscar Wolter (Munich, Germany/Lycee Jean Renoir) led Alfred University with 11 points, four rebounds and four assists. Kenneth Allison Jr (Troy, NY/Lansingburgh) finished the game with 10 points, six rebounds and four assists. Zion Baitey (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) stuffed the box score with 11 points, seven rebounds and a team-high five steals.

"Congratulations to Misericordia on a competitive win tonight," Head Coach Erich Kaempffe said. "Kevin Lazdowsky played well for them. I am proud of our team for their efforts, especially in the second half. We are excited for the opportunity to compete against another tough opponent in Pitt-Bradford next week."

Wolter opened scoring for AU with a three-point shot. The defense for AU stepped up early, limiting the Cougars to just five points across the first five minutes of action. The Saxons led for the first 13 minutes of play, but were forced to play from behind with just over six minutes remaining in the half. Another deep shot by Wolter gave the lead back to Alfred University. Allison Jr scored the final four points from AU before the team went into halftime with a 34-31 advantage.

The Cougars took a brief lead in the early stages of the second half, but a three-point shot by Amoi Charles (Elmont, NY/H. Frank Carey) gave the lead back to Alfred University. Moments later, a dunk by Charles was followed by a deep shot by Robby Hicks (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa). Misericordia ended up tying the game with just over 11 minutes to play. Following multiple lead changes, Tyler Hind (Randolph, NY/Randolph) tied the game once again with under four minutes remaining in regulation. The Saxons had the chance to walk away with the victory as time expired, but a deep shot by Hind was just off the mark as the final horn closed out the game.

Alfred University will next compete in their first road game of the 2024-25 season at Pitt-Bradford next Wednesday at 6:30 PM.
