ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's basketball team put together a strong second half, but were unable to complete the comeback as part of a 64-62 loss to Hilbert College on Tuesday night.
Tyler Hind (Randolph, NY/Randolph) led Alfred University with a team-high 19 points.
Amoi Charles (Elmont, NY/H. Frank Carey) finished the game with 12 points, nine rebounds, and a game-high four steals.
Oscar Wolter (Munich, Germany/Lycee Jean Renoir) added 12 points and five boards for AU.
"I thought collectively our guys played hard tonight and I'm so proud of their effort," Head Coach
Erich Kaempffe said. "Unfortunately, there are no moral victories. We're going to get back to work next week."
The Saxons were forced to play from behind in the opening half after the Hawks began the game on a 10-0 run. Hind scored nine consecutive points for Alfred University, all of which came from beyond the arc.
Tyler Curran (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) scored the final four points of the half for the Saxons, but the team still trailed 37-26 entering halftime.
Alfred University cut their deficit in the early moments of the second half thanks to five combined points between Charles and Wolter. A layup from
Zion Baitey (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) had the Saxons trailing by a single possession with over 15 minutes remaining in regulation. Moments later, Baitey hit a three-point shot to give AU their first lead of the evening. Five straight points from Charles extended the lead for Alfred University with under 11 minutes to play. Hilbert responded on the offensive end and tied the game with under four minutes to play.
With six seconds remaining, Hind hit a clutch shot that left the Saxons trailing by just two points. Hind nearly hit another three-point shot as time expired in regulation, but Hilbert ultimately came away with the competitive win.
Alfred University will next appear on Tuesday, December 3 on the road against Penn College with tip-off scheduled for 7:00 PM.
