Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Charles Drops 32 Points, AU Defeats Penn in Road Matchup

WILLIAMSPORT, PA - A high-scoring effort from the Alfred University men's basketball team resulted in a 89-76 win over Penn College on Tuesday night.

Alfred University was led by Amoi Charles (Elmont, NY/H. Frank Carey), who totaled 32 points, five rebounds and three steals. The 32 points from Charles was the most in a single game for the Saxons dating back to the 2019-20 season. Tyler Hind (Randolph, NY/Randolph) totaled 18 points and three steals. Zion Baitey (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) added 13 points and 10 boards for AU.

"We've had a really good last couple weeks of practice to reinvent ourselves a bit due to some extenuating circumstances," Head Coach Erich Kaempffe said. "I was gutted for our team when that didn't pay off on the scoreboard last Tuesday. I'm really happy for them that it did tonight."

The Saxons relied on the three-point shot to open the game, scoring their first 12 points from beyond the arc. Consecutive deep shots from Baitey were followed by a layup from Oscar Wolter (Munich, Germany/Lycee Jean Renoir) to give AU their first double-digit lead of the evening. Both Charles and Robby Hicks (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) hit three-point shots in the closing minutes for the Saxons before the team went into halftime with a 49-36 lead.

An opening 6-0 run by Penn to begin the second half was snapped thanks to a basket by Tyler Curran (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone). Charles scored six straight points for AU to extend the lead back to double-digit figures. Charles continued to dominate for Alfred University, scoring on a fastbreak opportunity to put the Saxons ahead by as many as 20 points. Penn put together a 9-1 run in the closing minutes, but successful free throw shooting from Hind was enough to secure the victory.

Alfred University will next open Empire 8 competition on the road at Nazareth University on Saturday at 7:00 PM.
