BUFFALO, NY – The Alfred University women's rugby team was handed a 30-0 mercy rule decision on Sunday afternoon to Buffalo State College.
The Saxons (1-5, 1-2 UNYCRC) played their first full, 80-minute match of the season. Buffalo State scored 30, unanswered points to being the match to initiate the conference mercy rule. Once enacted, play continued with no more official scores added to the scoreboard.
AU scored its first try of the day in the first half as
Monica Lewis (Buffalo, NY/Health Sciences Charter School) continued to have great pick-and-go's throughout the day.
April Pratt (Savona, NY/Campbell-Savona) made the conversion kick following the first of two tries of the day.
Cori Recktenwald (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post) was awarded a penalty try as they were high-tackled while about to score. Recktenwald was awarded AU's Player of the Match for having stepped up to play scrum half, showcasing their ability to counter-ruck while also getting in on multiple tackles.
The Rookie of the Match was
Jordayn Williams (Palmdale, CA/Quartz Hill), being the lifeblood of the Saxon defense, making multiple tackles, one right after another. She also had some big carries on the attacking side of the ball for AU.
"I'm happy to see growth in our execution since our last match," Head Coach
Dr. Nicole Bernsen said. "The team worked together on attack and continues to build our defensive skills. We have areas to work on this week but are looking forward to stepping on the pitch again next weekend!"
The Saxons will next travel to Binghamton University on Saturday, October 12 for a 1:45pm first kick.
