ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's rugby team dropped its home match against #11 SUNY Geneseo by a mercy rule score of 41-5 on Sunday.
Prior to the contest, the Saxons (3-3, 1-2 UNYCRC) honored graduating seniors
Danielle Bennett (Hammondsport, NY/Hammondsport Central) and
Carolyn Dokey (Buffalo, NY/Leonardo Da Vinci).
"The girls played a hard-fought match today," Volunteer Assistant Coach
April Pratt said. "The heat is tough, but they had increasing intensity until the very end. I'm proud of each and every one of them. On to the next two weeks."
Four Saxons contributed to the scoring column during the match.
Ellie Prestridge (Bethel, VT/White River Valley) registered the team's first try during the first half. After the mercy rule took effect, AU had tries scored by
Aurora Berry (Perry, NY/Perry), Dokey and
Samantha Stock (Ellicottville, NY/Ellicottville Central).
Alyssa Ainsworth (Vestal, NY/Corning-Painted Post) posted two points on a conversion.
"It was a tough game, but I'm proud of the effort we put in to finish the game," Dokey said. "I'm very excited to continue to watch the team grow in the following years."
"It was a tough game, but it takes a good team to be able to play that well with players down,"
Allison Parnes (New Hyde Park, NY/Homeschool) said.
The Saxons now prepare for the UNYCRC Conference Championships. The first round is set to take place on Sunday, Oct. 19, with a time yet to be determined.
