ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's basketball continued Empire 8 competition with a 76-58 loss to Nazareth University on Saturday from the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.
Adam Enders (Belfast, NY/Belfast) scored 17 points for Alfred University, 12 of which came from three-point territory.
Franlys Valenzuela (Santiago de los Cabelleros, Dominican Republic/San Ysidro) finished the game with 17 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
Gabe Eldaye (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) added seven points for AU.
"This wasn't quite the outcome we were looking for," Head Coach
Erich Kaempffe said. "A lot of credit to Nazareth and Coach Broderick for playing well. We're excited to get back to work for two tough road games next weekend."
Valenzuela scored in the opening seconds of the first half before Nazareth responded with an 8-0 run. Back-to-back three-point shots from Enders tied the game for the Saxons early on. Enders recorded eight more points for Alfred University in the first half, but the Golden Flyers relied on open shots to carry a 45-35 lead into the break.
Valenzuela was responsible for the opening six points for AU to begin the second half. A deep shot from Eldaye cut the deficit to seven points for the Saxons. An 11-0 run by Nazareth was ultimately ended by a layup from
Oscar Wolter (Munich, Germany/Lycee Jean Renoir). Both sides continued to compete well on both ends, but the deficit was too large for Alfred University to overcome before the final horn.
Alfred University will next compete on the road against Hartwick College on Friday at 7:30 PM.
