Second Half Rally Lifts Saxons Past Hawks

ONEONTA, NY – A competitive effort from the Alfred University men's basketball team resulted in a 66-57 win over Hartwick College on Friday evening.

The Saxons (5-9, 2-3 Empire 8) have now won each of their last five meetings against the Hawks (1-11, 0-5 Empire 8).

Franlys Valenzuela (Santiago de los Cabelleros, Dominican Republic/San Ysidro) finished the game with a double-double performance that consisted of 14 points and 12 rebounds. Oscar Wolter (Munich, Germany/Lycee Jean Renoir) recorded a double-double that included 12 points and 10 boards. Adam Enders (Belfast, NY/Belfast) added 16 points for AU.

"I was proud of our resiliency tonight," Head Coach Erich Kaempffe said. "We struggled offensively for 30 minutes, but we guarded for a full 40 minutes and that gave us a chance late to go make some plays."

Valenzuela scored the first four points to begin the first half. A 10-0 run by the Saxons had the team leading by as many as five points. The Hawks tied the game with a little more than three minutes remaining in the opening half. Three different players for AU scored in the final minutes before the team took a 30-26 lead into halftime.

Hartwick began the second half with a 13-2 lead, causing Alfred University to trail by as many as seven points. Baskets by Zion Baitey (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) and Wolter turned the game into a one-possession deficit with under 13 minutes to play.  The Hawks extended their lead by double-digit figures, but the Saxons responded with an 11-0 run to take a one-point lead with just over seven minutes remaining. Four straight points from Enders allowed AU to lead by five points with four minutes left in regulation. Alfred University relied on late free throw shooting to complete the comeback and capture the win.

Alfred University will next visit Russell Sage College on Saturday at 4:00 PM.
