ALBANY, NY – The Alfred University men's basketball team wrapped up their weekend with a 70-60 win over Russell Sage College on Saturday.
The Saxons (6-9, 3-3 Empire 8) have now defeated the Gators (6-8, 0-6 Empire 8) by double-digit figures in each of their last four meetings.
Oscar Wolter (Munich, Germany/Lycee Jean Renoir) led Alfred University with a team-high 20 points to go with a career-high 18 rebounds.
Zion Baitey (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) and
Nolan Gilbert (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) each added 12 points for AU.
"We played with tremendous effort tonight in the second half," Head Coach
Erich Kaempffe said. "Our guys made the necessary adjustments at halftime. We're happy with the weekend, but know we have a long way to go and a lot of things we need to get better at."
The Saxons relied on Wolter early, as he scored seven of the team's first 11 points. The Gators held a brief one-point advantage, but a three-point shot from Baitey gave AU the lead back. Additional deep shots from Baitey, Gilbert and
Amoi Charles (Elmont, NY/H. Frank Casey) gave the Saxons a competitive 37-36 lead going into the break.
Franlys Valenzuela (Santiago de los Cabelleros, Dominican Republic/San Ysidro) opened the scoring for Alfred University in the second half. Russell Sage took a five-point lead, but AU relied on baskets from Baitey and Gilbert to tie the game with roughly 15 minutes remaining. A 13-0 run for the Saxons had the team leading by as many as 11 points. Late free throw shooting from Alfred University was enough to hold on for the win.
Alfred University will next host Keuka College on Friday at 7:30 PM.
