ALFRED, NY – For the second week in a row, Alfred University's
Joe Copp (Minoa, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) has been selected to the Empire 8 Weekly Awards, as made official in an announcement by Associate Commissioner,
Joe Venniro on Monday.
Copp was named the Defensive Player of the Week for the second week in a row following an impressive performance in Washington, D.C. at Catholic University.
Copp played a leading role as part of a 9-6 non-conference win for the Alfred University football team over Catholic on Saturday. Copp finished the game with a season-high 19 tackles, 10 of which were solo. Copp was additionally credited with 2.5 tackles for a loss as part of AU's winning efforts, totaling nine yards while eight of those yards came from his two solo sacks. In the third quarter, a fumble recovery from Copp resulted in a go-ahead touchdown drive. In the following quarter, Copp made a critical solo tackle on fourth down to give the ball back to Alfred.
He added one pass breakup to his performance review. Copp now has 289 career tackles and is nine tackles shy from the program's all-time career tackles record book. Copp was named one of the Saxons of the Week for his efforts.
Copp also earned Saxon of the Week on Monday. He was joined by
Abby Wilson (Greece, NY/Odyssey Academy) as the other Saxon of the Week and was also named the Empire 8 Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.
