ALFRED, NY – After three weeks of play and being undefeated, the Alfred University women's tennis team has its third Empire 8 Player of the Week as
Macy Youngberg (Falconer, NY/Falconer Central) was named on Monday in an official announcement from Associate Commissioner,
Joe Venniro.
Youngberg helped the Saxons continue their undefeated streak and open up Empire 8 play with a 9-0 sweep over Utica. She was undefeated in singles at the No. 2 spot while going 2-1 at No. 1 doubles with
Alina Zabihailo (Kyiv, Ukraine/Educational Complex #143). After dropping a 7-7 (8-6) No. 1 doubles to Penn State-Behrend, Youngberg would go the rest of the week without giving up more than three points in a single set. She finished the PS-Behrend match with a 6-3, 6-2 win over the other half of the No. 1 doubles team for the Lions, earning some retribution (as did Zabihailo at No. 1 singles) in the 6-2 home win. Youngberg and Zabihailo took an 8-3 win against SUNY Brockport in doubles, just before Youngberg won No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-1. She closed out her week with Empire 8 play, hosting Utica and winning No. 1 doubles, 8-3 and No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0 as she celebrated her Senior Day. Youngberg was named a Saxon of the Week for her efforts on the week.
Zabihailo earned the first two Empire 8 Women's Tennis Player of the Week honors for this season.
Youngberg was joined in the Empire 8 spotlight by
Joe Copp (Minoa, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) as the Football Defensive Player of the Week and
Kiani Barnard-Pratt (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) as the Women's Soccer Co-Defensive Player of the Week. She also was named a Saxon of the Week along with women's cross country's
McKenzie Hall (Hornell, NY/Hornell) on Monday.
