FINALS BOUND! Saxons Take Down Cardinals in 4-2 Victory

HOUGHTON, NY — The Alfred University women's tennis team advanced to the Empire 8 Championship final with a 4-2 victory over St. John Fisher University on Friday afternoon. With the win, the No. 6-seeded Saxons became the lowest-seeded team in Empire 8 history to reach the championship final.

"The hits just keep on coming," Head Coach Jordan Crouch said. "We're playing our best tennis at the right time! I told Alyssa during her singles match that I thought it would be a great opportunity for her to have a big win. And she delivered! I am shocked, amazed, proud, and thrilled to be coaching this group. They fight for every ball in every point. There is no quit in us. Special shoutout to first doubles avenging a loss from earlier in the year in a big way! I think that really set the tone for the rest of the match. Tomorrow we have our biggest test of the year in Geneseo. They are strong. But I know we're going to work our tails off and compete. Let's go Saxons!"

Alfred University set the tone early in doubles play. Becca Epping (Mitchell, IN/Bedford North Lawrence) and Alyssa Seegert (Oroville, CA/Las Plumas) earned a 6-4 victory at No. 1 doubles. Elizabeth Madsen (Portland, OR/Grant) and Camryn Moore (Prattsburgh, NY/Prattsburgh Central) secured the doubles point with a hard-fought win at No. 2 doubles.

St. John Fisher evened the team score with a victory at No. 2 singles, but the Saxons responded with a series of strong performances. Gits continued her impressive afternoon with a dominant 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles, while Elizabeth Madsen (Portland, OR/Grant) added a 6-2, 6-2 win to maintain Alfred University's lead.

Seegert delivered the clinching point for the Saxons at No. 1 singles, earning a 6-3, 6-4 victory to secure Alfred University's place in the Championship Final.

Alfred University will face top-seeded SUNY Geneseo in the Empire 8 Championship final on Saturday at 1:00 PM. The match will be played at Houghton University due to weather conditions.
