Box Score HOUGHTON, NY -- The Alfred University women's tennis team competed in the Empire 8 Championship match, falling in a 4-0 sweep to the Knights on Saturday.
"Congrats to Geneseo. They have been the best team in the conference all year long and they proved it again today," Head Coach
Jordan Crouch said. "Coach Heverly has done a great job with them. They should be proud."
SUNY Geneseo ended the year undefeated as the top seed in the conference. Meanwhile, the Saxons still have a lot to hang their head and be proud of, becoming the first six seed to make it to the final.
AU battled in doubles play, with
Allison Windisch (Pittsford, NY/Sutherland) and
Alexis Gits (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit) playing in the No. 3 spot. They were within one point at the conclusion of the unfinished match.
The competitive spirit continued in singles matches. Windisch was leading in the second set when the championship was clinched, and Gits was within one after dropping the first set. In the No. 6 spot,
Camryn Moore (Prattsburgh, NY/Prattsburgh Central) won the first set 6-4. However, the strength of the top three for the Knights clinched the championship for the top seed.
"I am gutted for our team. We played some of our best tennis of the season today," Head Coach
Jordan Crouch said. "I feel for our seniors. They have led this team all year long and I wanted this one for them. Thank you to Alyssa, Liz, and Allison for all they have put into this program for the past four seasons. I am incredibly proud of each of them and thankful for what they have contributed to this program and to me personally. This program is so special. I couldn't be more proud of our effort this season and into the postseason. Thanks to Coach Cilino for all of his efforts this year. Thank you for our awesome AT's keeping our team healthy and ready to compete. Thank you for our Athletic Comms staff for the videos, pictures, stories, and love. Thank you for our administration in believing in this program and the endless support. I love this team. LET'S GO SAXONS!"
But the Saxons did not leave empty handed.
Becca Epping (Mitchell, IN/Bedford North Lawrence) was given the torchbearer award for the player with the highest GPA on the court for both sides.
AU will turn its attention to the offseason and prepare for spring play, while eyeing a return back to the championship match next fall.
