BUFFALO, NY - A total of 15 different players from the Alfred University men's lacrosse team scored as part of a 27-3 win over Medaille University on Saturday afternoon from the Medaille Sports Complex.
The Saxons (10-4, 5-1 Empire 8) put across 61 shots, while forcing the Mavericks (2-10, 0-5 Empire 8) to 30 turnovers.
Alfred University was led by the efforts of
Kevin Matson (Chenango Bridge, NY/Chenango Forks), who finished the game with six goals and one assist. P
eter Colburn (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) totaled six points from three goals and three assists.
Hunter Cupp (Bath, NY/Haverling) added two points from a goal and an assist while picking up a team-high 11 ground balls for AU.
"The season is going by quickly this time of year," Head Coach
Jason Lockner said. "It was great to get everyone in the game. Shea had a good game today on offense and our faceoff guys Hunter, James and Aaron did a great job as well."
The Saxons wasted no time finding the back of the net in the first quarter, as
Justin Mosher (Hilton, NY/Hilton) opened scoring for Alfred University.
Josh Hauman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) scored less than a minute later to extend the lead for the Saxons.
Drew Cartwright (Elmira, NY/Elmira) dished back-to-back assists to Matson to give AU some breathing room. Alfred University scored nine additional goals before carrying a 13-0 lead into the second quarter. A pass from
Dawson Felenchak (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) to Matson in the early stages of the second quarter put the Saxons back on the scoreboard. Medaille scored once in the second quarter, but Alfred University responded with five goals of their own to lead 19-1 at halftime.
The second half held a similar tune for AU, as
Marcus Darminio (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) was one of the Saxons responsible for six total goals in the third quarter. The Mavericks managed to find the back of the net twice in the final quarter, but goals from
Shea Grebleski (Elmira, NY/Elmira) and
James Bisaccia (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) were enough to offset the damage and secure the victory.
"The last regular season game is important since it'll be a conference game," Lockner said. "We would really like to send these seniors out with a win."
Alfred University will next return home for their Senior Day on Saturday, April 29 against Utica at 1:00 PM. Prior to the game, the men's lacrosse program will honor their outgoing senior class who have dedicated their time to collegiate athletics.
