ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University concluded their regular season with an 18-7 win over Utica University on Saturday afternoon from Yunevich Stadium.
The Saxons (11-4, 6-1 Empire 8) finished 18-of-19 in clear attempts, while the Pioneers (7-10, 3-4 Empire 8) committed 25 turnovers.
Prior to the game, Alfred University celebrated and recognized 11 players from the men's lacrosse program who appeared in their final regular season collegiate game. The program additionally took a moment to thank Athletic Trainer
Collin Recore, who will graduate at the end of the semester.
The Saxons were led by
Dawson Felenchak (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads), who totaled six points from five goals and one assist.
Kevin Matson (Chenango Bridge, NY/Chenango Forks) ended the game with three goals.
Scott Kimiecik (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) picked up eight saves in the win for the AU.
"Any time you can win 10 or more games in a season, you've got a good team," Head Coach
Jason Lockner said. "The main reason we are playing so well is due to our captains. Paul, Drew, Joey, Scott and the rest of the seniors have been great contributors and have led by example. I am proud of all of them."
The Saxons set the tone in the first quarter, as
Drew Cartwright (Elmira, NY/Elmira) found the back of the net for the early lead. The Pioneers responded with a goal of their own before Felenchak, Matson, and
Hunter Cupp (Bath, NY/Haverling) each scored to extend the lead. Felenchak scored one additional goal in the final minutes of the first quarter before the Saxons entered the second quarter with a 6-2 lead.
Josh Hauman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) opened scoring for AU to begin the second quarter. Moments later, both Cupp and
Justin Mosher (Hilton, NY/Hilton) each found the back of the net for Alfred University. The Saxons relied on four additional goals before entering halftime with a commanding 13-4 lead.
Each team scored once in the third quarter, with Felenchak finding his fourth goal of the afternoon. Felenchak scored once again in the opening minute of the fourth quarter. Three combined goals between Matson and
Peter Colburn (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) was enough to secure the win for the Saxons.
"The team is pretty excited to be hosting on Wednesday," Lockner said. "Our goal is to win an Empire 8 Championship."
Alfred University will next host Nazareth College on Wednesday at 4:00 PM as part of the Empire 8 Tournament Semifinals.
