ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's lacrosse team found success early on, but fell short in an 18-9 loss to St. John Fisher University on Wednesday evening from Yunevich Stadium.
The Saxons (7-4, 3-1 Empire 8) recorded 16 shots on goal, while the Cardinals (4-8, 4-0 Empire 8) turned the ball over 20 times.
Alfred University was led by
Kevin Matson (Chenango Bridge, NY/Chenango Forks), who finished the game with two goals across a team-high six shots on goal.
Josh Hauman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) ended with two goals and one assist.
Dawson Felenchak (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) added two points from one goal and one assist for AU.
"As a team we need to take better care of the ball and shoot better on offense like we have been," Head Coach
Jason Lockner said. "Connor played well on offense today."
Joseph Visconte Jr (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) opened scoring for Alfred University in the first quarter, launching the ball across the field to find the back of the net. Moments later, a pass from Felenchak to Hauman gave the Saxons their first lead of the game. A goal from St. John Fisher was quickly answered by
Connor DiDomineck (Bath, NY/Haverling), as AU entered the second quarter with a 3-2 lead. Matson was the lone Saxon to score in the second quarter, as the Cardinals found some momentum before going into halftime with a 10-5 advantage.
St. John Fisher was the first to score in the second half, but Alfred University retaliated with goals from Felenchak and
Paul Forte (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena). The Cardinals added two more goals, leaving the Saxons behind 13-7 with one quarter remaining. DiDomineck and Matson each found the back of the net for AU in the fourth quarter, but the Cardinals scored five goals of their own to extend the lead and seal the win.
"We need to bounce back and get a few things cleaned up and get ready for Keuka," Lockner said. "Our goal is to win this conference. Joe did a great job with the ground balls today."
Alfred University will next travel to face Keuka College on Saturday at 4:00 PM.
