SPARKS, MD – The Alfred University men's lacrosse team came up short in a 10-7 loss to Emmanuel College on Wednesday afternoon from the US Lacrosse HQ.
The Saxons (2-2, 0-0 Empire 8) shot the ball 37 times, while the Saints (1-2, 0-0 GNAC) gave up 25 turnovers.
Alfred University was led by the efforts of
Kevin Matson (Chenango Bridge, NY/Chenango Forks), who totaled three goals across seven shots on goal.
Marcus Darminio (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) finished the game with three points from one goal and two assists.
Scott Kimiecik (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) picked up 10 saves for AU.
"We turned the ball over way too much and need to shoot better," Head Coach
Jason Lockner said. "
Hunter Cupp did a great job on the face-offs. We got off to a slow start today. We need to focus on taking care of the ball, hitting our shots on offense and being better as a team on defense."
Emmanuel set the tone in the first quarter, scoring four straight goals to put Alfred University in an early deficit. A pass from Darminio to Matson got the Saxons on the scoreboard in the closing seconds of the quarter. AU carried their momentum going into the second quarter, relying on Darminio to find the back of the net. The Saints scored once before Matson and
Brendan Riley (Fairport, NY/Fairport) responded with goals before the break.
Matson and
Ian DiDomineck (Bath, NY/Haverling) each scored in man-up situations in the third quarter, but Emmanuel found the back of the net four times to extend their lead.
Paul Forte (Greece, NY/Greece Athena) was the lone Saxon to score in the fourth quarter, as Alfred University was unable to complete the comeback.
Alfred University will next travel to Lycoming University on Wednesday for a non-conference matchup at 5:00 PM.
