WILLIAMSPORT, PA - The Alfred University men's lacrosse team returned to the win column following an 18-10 victory over Lycoming College on Wednesday evening from UPMC Field.
The Saxons (3-2, 0-0 Empire 8) finished the game 19-of-20 in clear attempts, while the Warriors (2-5, 0-0 PAC) surrendered 22 turnovers.
Kevin Matson (Chenango Bridge, NY/Chenango Forks) scored a career-high six goals across seven shots on goal.
Paul Forte (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) totaled four points from two goals and two assists.
Justin Mosher (Hilton, NY/Hilton) added one goal and dished three assists for AU.
"We came out and played a great first half," Head Coach
Jason Lockner said. "We needed that. We asked our guys to respond, and they did. Matson and Cupp each had another great game."
The Saxons got off to a quick start in the first quarter thanks to
Brendan Riley (Fairport, NY/Fairport) finding the back of the net. A pass from
Connor DiDomineck (Bath, NY/Haverling) to
Josh Hauman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) extended AU's lead moments later. The Saxons relied on goals from Forte, Matson and
Marcus Darminio (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) before going into the second quarter with a 5-1 lead.
Alfred University needed less than a minute to find the back of the net in the second quarter, as Matson scored his second man-up goal of the evening. DiDomineck and Matson each scored once more before
Cameron Kenefick (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post) scored his first goal of the game. Lycoming scored three times in the second quarter, but Matson scored twice more before AU went into the break with a 12-4 advantage.
The Warriors opened scoring in the third quarter, but goals from Darminio and Kenefick offset the damage before the Saxons entered the final quarter with a 14-6 lead. Goals from Forte and Mosher early in the fourth quarter gave AU their first double-digit goal advantage of the game. Matson scored once more for the Saxons, which was followed by
Hunter Cupp (Bath, NY/Haverling) scoring his first collegiate goal before the final horn for Alfred University.
"We will need to come out strong and keep the momentum," Lockner said. "
Benjamin Cunningham played very well on defense and will have to do it again on Saturday. He is a first-year defender covering our opponent's top players."
Alfred University will next return home to host King's College (PA) on Saturday at 4:00 PM.
