ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's lacrosse team endured the cold weather and came away with a 22-1 win over King's College on Saturday afternoon from Yunevich Stadium.
The Saxons (4-2, 0-0 Empire 8) totaled 71 shots in their win, while the Monarchs (0-6, 0-0 Empire 8) were limited to 11-of-22 clear attempts.
Marcus Darminio (Marcellus, NY) finished the game with seven points from five goals and two assists.
Kevin Matson (Chenango Bridge, NY/Chenango Forks) totaled four goals while dishing two assists.
Peter Colburn (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) added four goals and four assists for AU.
"Peter had a great day today," Head Coach
Jason Lockner said. "He had been practicing well and he performed well in the game. It was great to see
James Bisaccia and
Shea Grebleski get their first career goals. I'm excited for those guys for the fact that everyone can get in."
The Saxons relied on Colburn in the first quarter, as he scored each of Alfred University's first two goals for the early lead. Moments later,
Justin Mosher (Hilton, NY/Hilton) found the back of the net to extend the advantage for AU. Colburn dished assists to
Connor DiDomineck (Bath, NY/Haverling) and Darminio to give the Saxons some breathing room. Colburn and Matson each scored once before Alfred University went into the second quarter with an 8-0 lead.
Both Matson and Mosher were able to find the back of the net within the first five minutes of action to begin the second quarter. An additional goal from Matson was followed by
Dawson Felenchak (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) and
Hunter Cupp (Bath, NY/Haverling) each scoring their first goals of the afternoon.
Darminio got the Saxons started in the second half, scoring twice across a five-minute span. Both Colburn and Darminio scored once more before AU ended the third quarter with a 16-0 lead. Five different Saxons scored in the fourth quarter before King's got themselves on the scoreboard with 3 seconds remaining to avoid the shutout.
"As far as moving forward to Geneseo, we have got to put a complete game together," Lockner said. "They are a very good team, and we are working hard, but we need to clean up before conference competition begins. We are looking forward to great competition on Wednesday!"
Alfred University will next travel to SUNY Geneseo on Wednesday with the game scheduled to begin at 4:00 PM.
