ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's lacrosse team scored seven goals in the fourth quarter as part of a 19-14 win over Westminster College on Wednesday evening from Yunevich Stadium.
The Saxons (2-0, 0-0 Empire 8) totaled 54 shots in their win, while the Titans (0-3, 0-0 PAC) gave up 19 turnovers.
Kevin Matson (Chenango Bridge, NY/Chenango Forks) matched his career-high with five goals to go with two assists.
Paul Forte (Greece, NY/Greece Athena) finished the game with four points from three goals and one assist.
Drew Cartwright (Elmira, NY/Elmira) scored twice while dishing three assists for AU.
"We did a great job in the fourth quarter, but we need to focus on doing a better job on the ground balls from the beginning of the game," Head Coach
Jason Lockner said. "
Hunter Cupp was the man at the faceoffs today and was a huge difference in this game.
Brendan Riley and
Andrew Schuhwerk stepped up big time for us today as well."
Justin Mosher (Hilton, NY/Hilton) opened scoring for the Saxons early in the first quarter. The Titans responded quickly with a goal of their own before Alfred relied on goals from
Connor DiDomineck (Bath, NY/Haverling), Matson, and Schuhwerk to take a 4-1 lead. Westminster scored once more, but Alfred University led 4-2 going into the second quarter. The Titans were the first to get on the scoreboard in the second quarter, but Matson answered with two goals across the first three minutes. Later in the half, goals from Forte, Cartwright and Riley had the Saxons leading 9-5 entering the break.
Westminster was the first to score in the third quarter, but back-to-back assists from Cartwright to Matson extended AU's lead. Four straight goals from the Titans cut their deficit to one goal, but
Josh Hauman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) found the back of the net for the Saxons to give the team some breathing room. Westminster scored twice more before the end of the quarter to equalize the score, 12-12. The Saxons took control in the fourth quarter, relying on goals from Cartwright, Forte, Mosher and
Marcus Darminio (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) to lead 17-12 with just over seven minutes to play. Westminster found the back of the net twice in the fourth quarter, but both Darminio and Riley scored for AU before the final horn.
Alfred University will next travel to compete against Skidmore College on Sunday at 1:00 PM.
